The Book Club
Life’s simple pleasures: Hot chocolate on a cold winter’s day, a friendly hug, smiles, a cuddly puppy, a baby’s kiss, and a good book. How delightful it is to find a book that stimulates your thinking when you are bored * that makes you laugh when you are sad * that takes you to faraway places, if only in your mind * or that opens your world to new experiences and ideas.
The West Wilmington Church Book Club gives its members an excuse to kick off their shoes, curl up in their favorite chair and just read. Once a month all are invited to attend a supper at a member’s home, share the joy of fellowship and discuss the current book. Attendees bring something to share for the meal, and sometimes the meal takes center stage rather than the book as we share new recipes and gourmet delights. And sometimes the book brings out strong feelings on both sides of a subject – some hating the book while others enjoyed it. Our church is fortunate to have people from around the globe in its membership and we find we learn more about the world through the experiences of others that are vastly different from our own in some ways, and yet deep in the core of our beings so very much the same. So each time we meet, it is an adventure in learning more about each other as well as ourselves.
Club membership started with only four people in the 1990's. But we have been steadily growing as the word is spread about the good food and fun we have. We would love to have you join us – even if you haven’t read the book! You may find this becomes a favorite activity to look forward to each month.
